Boats
go into the water at ALMEDA BAR and come out at HOG EDDY near Agness.
Our First stop is for trip registration at GRAVE CREEK Bureau of
Land Management check station. The trip is yours. The boatmen will
point out areas where gold panning is apt to be "colorful",
where there are good camera angles and exciting things to see. (Scenic
trips are not fishing trips but if you have a small rod, and Oregon
license, ask your boatman about early morning and evening holes
near the lodges.)
We drift over GRAVE CREEK RAPIDS then beach to photograph and portage
around RAINIE FALLS. The dash through TYEE and splash of WILDCAT
RAPIDS is followed by HOWARD CREEK CHUTE. We run the WASHBOARD,
roar through WINDY CREEK CHUTE and over BLACK BAR FALLS. Our first
night is at BLACK BAR LODGE where after family dinner the famous
Oregon "leaverite" will be discussed. You'll sleep soundly
in cozy cabins.
Second
day down the WILD RIVER we swish around HORSESHOE BEND, over KELSEY
FALLS, around BATTLE BAR and WINKLE BAR to ZANE GRAY'S CABIN. We'll
beach, look maybe shoot some film but leave only our foot-prints
behind. MISSOURI BAR awaits us then over JOHN'S RIFFLE to MULE CREEK.
At times there's not a sound save for the dip of the oars. Of coarse
there are swimming holes all along the way. We put in at MARIAL
for another great dinner and sleep. As early birds, we cast off
next morning and wash thorough MULE CREEK CANYON -- at times barely
wide enough for the boat -- then boil in the COFFEE POT and churn
over BLOSSOM BAR RAPIDS. You'll probably stop here to take pictures.
On DEVIL'S STAIRCASE we plunge 20 feet in 300 yards! Swirling around
SOLITUDE BAR and splashing through TACOMA RAPIDS brings us to ILLAHE
or SANTA
ANITA LODGE where we are welcome for a home-cooked dinner. And
beds (on 4-day trips) Here you might see black bear and deer.
Next
we hang on through FOSTER CREEK RAPIDS and pass half a dozen creeks
all emptying into the WILD RIVER. In this stretch you can drift
for miles on an inflatable kayak in a serene waterway being disturbed
only for a call to lunch! What an unusual vacation!
At SHASTA COSTA CREEK we have our final swim and picnic lunch at
the famous salamander racing site. On rounding the next turn we
see HOG EDDY, our take-out point.
Drifting the WILD RIVER ROGUE with Irv Urie is a fun-filled, exciting
excursion you'll never forget.
EACH PARTY will be contacted a few days before the trip to check
on last minute questions. Rendezvous at Grants Pass for 7:00 to
8:00 a.m. convoy to ALMEDA BAR or GRAVE CREEK, depending on 3 -
4 day trip.
If you lack other arrangements, we have dependable drivers (for
hire) who can pick up your car at the river and deliver it to you
at the take-out point.
Itinerary may vary depending on length of your trip. Specific overnight
accommodations are subject to change. Trips proceed rain or shine
unless conditions are hazardous.
